Default Air Conditioning Problem

I just bought an 05 F150 Supercrew FX4 and the whole time i drove it home i ran the ac and it worked perfectly. Well when i put my kids in the truck and i started it and ran the ac for them so it would cool down while i was putting stuff in the bed. Well when i came back it was hotter in the cab that it was outside. So when i came home i let the ac run full blast and it was comming out kind of cool and then it started to come out a little warmer. So i thought the freon in the system was just a little low and decided to go get a recharge kit. When i hooked the ac recharge kit up the gauge read that the system was fully charged. Then i went in the cab and the air was blowing out ice cold.

I tried to do some research and i pulled up the temperature blend door actuator and thought this may be the problem. Also i have the electronic manual temperature control.

this is some information i have from another forum

TSB 08-23-6

EATC - INTERMITTENT WARM AIR OUTPUT
TEMPERATURE SET 68-72 F (18-22 C) EMTC -
INABILITY TO CONTROL TEMPERATURE OUTPUT FORD:
2005-2008 F-15O LINCOLN:
2006-2008 Mark LT ISSUE
Some 2005-2008 F-150 and 2006-2008 Mark LT vehicles equipped with Electronic Automatic Temperature Control (EATC) may exhibit intermittent periods of warm air output in Auto mode with the temperature control set between 68-72 degrees Fahrenheit (18-22 degrees Celsius). Some 2005-2008 F-150 vehicles equipped with Electronic Manual Temperature Control (EMTC) may exhibit periods where the cabin temperature cannot be maintained with the control ****. Some customers may also complain the heat cannot be reduced without rotating the control **** well into the Cool/Blue range. ACTION
Refer to the following Service Procedure to correct the condition. SERVICE PROCEDURE
The condition may be caused by a faulty temperature blend door actuator. 1. Check actuator activity. a. EATC systems may be monitored with the IDS PID (LBLNDPOS). b. EMIC systems may be observed through the right side of the instrument panel with the glove compartment door positioned downward. 2. Erratic PID activity or an actuator that appears to be erratically hunting for correct position during the condition should be replaced. Refer to Workshop Manual, Section 412-01,for removal and installation details. NOTE THE IGNITION KEY MUST BE OFF WHEN REPLACING THE ACTUATOR. ENERGIZING THE ACTUATOR BEFORE INSTALLATION ON THE HEATING VENTILATION AIR CONDITIONING (HVAC) CASE WILL CAUSE THE PART TO BECOME MISS POSITIONED AND CORRECT ORIENTATION WILL BE LOST. INCORRECT ACTUATOR OPERATION MAY RESULT

i just want some feedback as to what might be the real problem so i can see if i can fix it myself rather than pay a mechanic a lot of money for something i can do myself. Any information would be greatly appreciated!

In your described case, I'd go with the acuator door. This has been posted here before as a cause for no heat, and no AC. Common failure.

And good job doing the research. Not many folks do this these days. Your going to do quite well in maintaining that new truck. I also see a great contributor to this forum!!!

Thanks, yea i try to do research before i ask questions but sometimes i'm not sure if that's the main problem. I noticed that if i turn the dial to hot for a split second and then back to cool then it blows out cold ac. I've only had to do this once so i'm not real sure if it is the actuator door or not.

Refrigerant pressure switch causing the compressor to turn off, maybe.

When it's blowing hot is the compressor still running?

with and 05 f150 lariat I just started having the same as problem...cold air is erratic.
coldest on the floor/dash vents and then when switched to just dash vents the air gets warmer.
took truck to a dealer and they said they will look up the problem...
I figured until I find somebody that has fixed it first had no use leaving it in the shop.

anybody have any luck yet ?

Default F150 intermittent AC

I have a 2002 F150 190k-mi with manual a/c. Recently, sometimes the ac will work with engine start but typically requires 20~40 min of driving before it suddenly kicks in strong. The fan always blows fine. Once the ac kicks in, it stays on until the engine is shutdown and usually does not activate upon re-start until driven for awhile.

I was thinking it might be a corroded contact but i have noticed that it more likely to work normally in the morning and almost never in the middle of the day which leads me to believe that ambient temperature may be affecting a some sensor.

Any ideas?

Ron

Go for the blend door it is a common issue and also most common cause for sporadic a/c heat blowing and good job on the research!

Also just an FYI buying the freon cans with the gauge is really more of a gimmick. The reason they are not useful is because to properly test the freon in the system you should have two readings, one from the low side port and one from the high side port then you find out your ambiant temprature. Your pressures will change dependent on the ambiant temp. which is how you know if it is full or not. The gauge that you are looking at is pretty much telling you the same thing that you can find out by if/how often your A/C clutch is kicking on and off and ALWAYS remember to much freon is just as bad as to little.

Default ac clutch

I did notice this morning, because the radio was off, that the clutch cycled every seven seconds but ambient air was cool. After work and after driving 40 minutes it kicked on and the clutch did not cycle. Does this indicate that freon is low or is cycling normal on cool days when it doesn't need to work hard. Cooler air and T-storms are forecast so it will be interesting to see if it is okay until next heat wave.

Find you low pressure switch and stick a wire it the plug (not the sensor the end with the wires) see if it turns the clutch on and then check if it is cold (ish)....if not repeat with the high pressure switch if it works then you need to check your freon levels or it could be the switch is bad
