Now, Im no expert and you can listen to me or not. I did a quick Kelly Blue book search and came up with 13k. Thats good the engine has 500 miles, but where did it come from? Who installed it? 104k miles is a lot and you might have a lot of headaches down the road replacing parts here and there. Does the truck have any kind of warranty? I would probably pass up on it. Sounds like it was beat and driven hard its whole life and might turn out to be a basket case in the future.

If it were me I would say no....here is why.

If the engine blew i have to question the overall care of the truck, ie the tranny, diffs, cooling, everything. Tires is a given when you buy a used truck anymore, especially a 4x4. The 4X4 brings another issue to light....most people do not take care of their vehicles, when it's 4X4 it makes it even worse. The $$ might not be too bad, but the huevos are saying

Just my 2 cents...

The dealer probably would have given you a 3-year/3,000 mile warranty.

Dealers warranty is already up, but I'm sure the engine would have been covered - nothing else.

Think about it.. you'll take that engine for about 100k miles, but by that time, the transmission and every other part has gone 200k.

Are you more concerned with the price or the fact that it's not the natural engine? I'm asking because you guys are the experts. As far as the price, I've search Auto-trader with a 200 mile radius and can't find hardly find any 2004 4x4 crew-cabs that are less than $16,000, and those usually have atleast 40k.

I mean, I'm a very mechanical guy that has done my share of truck repairs, but how complicated is it to replace an engine correctly the first time? Is there a good chance that I won't have any issues being this is a dealership with "professional" Ford mechanics? Or is it a coin toss that this thing is going to go like they tell me it is?

This is dilema I'm dealing with:

If all goes well, I got a good deal on a truck with a new engine, from a good friend, of a good friend. If all goes bad, I got a good price (considering the Auto-trader searches) on a truck, but now I have to deal with issues regarding the non-natural engine.

Guide me towards the light. thanks.
500 miles on the engine yes, but the rest of the truck has the original 104K. Transmission (expensive), rear end, and not to mention the electricals (i.e. power windows, door locks, all that can add up in price when they fail too).

Sounds like you have you mind made up in buying this truck and are trying to convince US.

I agree with the majority: too much money for the truck. Walk away. There are much better deals out there, for less mileage even. As one post pointed out, there are leftover '08 models selling for 12 to 15K, depending on model.
