Default Adventures replacing my fuel filter

So I've had my CEL on for a while and I went to Auto Zone and they put the code reader on it and it said I had low fuel pressure. Iwent to Nappa and bought a filter and today I went to change it out.
The first step is to take off this splash guard on the side of the frame so that I could unplug the fuel pump to release the fuel pressure. The splash guard is a little over a foot long, 2" deep and 3" high. It was so full of wet road gravel that it looked like someone had filled it on purpose.
I had a little trouble getting the rear clip off of the fuel line and broke it but I wasn't worried because the filter came with 2 extra clips. the front end of the filter was different though and went into a metal fuel line, requiring a spring release tool that I didn't have! I decided a trip to town was in order to get the tool so I put the rear line back on and to my dismay the replacement clips don't fit!!! Luckily I was able to put the larger half of the old clip back in and it didn't leak.
Nappa had the tool and some extra clips so I was able to get everything back together again, no CEL, nice smooth idle(was kinda shakey before) and a new tool and some extra clips for next time!
Anyone else have the experience of having that splash guard filled with gravel?

Nope I never bother with unhooking the pump. I just unhook the back line and let it drain into a bucket.

I was thinking about putting some sheet metal over it like a little roof.

pull the fuse for the fuel pump and let the truck run till it dies...much easier...

that would be easier but it bugs me that 2 major electrical connections were literally buried under a couple of inches of wet gravel and dirt.

I don't recall any shields when I replaced mine.
