Default Spare wheel rust removal & restoration

Got a 2005 screw been in new england all its life and spare wheel is caked up pretty bad with rust. Plan on attmepting to clean & coat the rim (dont plan on removing the tire from wheel). Looking to get thoughts on best way to approach this.

Right now my plan is:
- Power wash / scrape most of the loose scale off
- drench in cola and then try scrubbing with aluminum foil (has worked good on removing rust from bumpers before)
- if theres still alot of rust will try sanding with fine grit
-spray paint - anyone have recommendations for a good wheel coat? Just gonna do black over the steel rim.

Thanks!

Just get a wire brush that attaches to a drill and go to town on the rim. That would be the quickest way and works great.

Paint with a rustoleum primer and paint color of your choice.

Thanks yea wire brush would work better. Do u think its worth spraying on some rust converter before primer? Or overkill

I'd say that's overkill for your spare rim IMO.

I just touched up my spare -also a 2005 but not too bad
Wire brush, a little sandpaper
I used spray paint I think & it did have something about rust converter
Plan on keeping my truck another 9 years at least
1 can of paint is better then buying another rim
--tho you can usually get a spare plain rim for cheap

After you remove the rust with the wire wheel shoot it with some loctite rust inhibitor ... found it at Home depot...it will turn it black...then paint

Instead of just spray paint, I would get you a quart of POR15 and brush it on thick after your prep. Stuff works wonders...

Ive never tried it, but I have heard that it'll flake if you dont use "metal prep" on it beforehand. Have you done just POR15 only and had success?

I ended up using eastwood rust encapsulator, which seems to be holding up fine so far.

I should look at my 06 spare. Probably not pretty. Good for you for taking care of yours. I'd say if you just made sure your spare was pumped up with air you're ahead of half of us. myself included.
