Are the 8.8"'s in these interchangeable with say a 93 and up. I know those have the ring for the ABS/wheel speed sensor? I want to know to start looking for one in a salvage yard? I see on owner.ford.com that they are still the 31 spline. I want to do the Trac Lock (limited slip) upgrade I can find PLENTY of the 97-03's in the salvage yard they don't all have the 8.8" but some do. I can also find plenty of Explorers which are 8.8"s and a lot of them were limited slip, just that I have found the bearings suck in them and I usually change them anyway. But I guess what I want to know if I have the 8.8 (which I do) is it pretty well the standard run of the mill 8.8 that Ford has put out for decades now?

Anything is possible, the spring perch and shock mounts will need to be moved I'm sure.
As for the 97-03 8.8" all 4.6L F-150s had 8.8" there should be a large amount out there.
Why not go with a 9.75"?

I don't want the whole dainged axle. Far too expensive and too much work when all I want is limited slip. Removing the diff is basically
1 jack up get wheels off the ground
2 remove cover
3 spin wheels until pin bolt is accessable and remove it
4 remove pin shove axles in
5 remove clips from axles and pull them out some
6 remove 4 bolts that holds the diff in. keep shims SHOULD match housing and ring and pinion gear
7 throw new chunk in, in reverse order.
All that said its maybe a couple of hours. Want to keep my ring and pinion. Don't want a bigger axle just limited slip. I just want to know if the internals are the same. I am 99.9% sure they are.
