Default 5.4 triton

my son bought a 2004 ford f150 with the 5.4 triton engine. Sitting at a drive thru he goes to leave and the engine starts to miss terribly. We replaced the plugs and all the coil packs. Still missing. Carried to a shop and the mechanic told him that the clutch's on the cam are locked up on one side causing the engine to run on half an engine. Is this true? Or is he talking about the can phasers? He said it will cost about 2 grand to fix. Need help!!!

Sounds like he means the cam phasers. Is the truck getting any codes?

This sounds like what happened to my truck, just (like 2 days) before I was to use the truck for a vacation. Phasers. Turns out, the butt wad dealership that I had purchased the truck from (used) said before I bought it that they would repair the phasers. I held them to it and they were mad at me. So they fixed it enough to say they fixed it. About a year later, it went bad. Took the truck to a dealership I trusted and they fixed it while I was on vacation. Ford covered all the parts except one. It was $30 bucks. I was told that if the other, lazy worthless dealership would have replaced that part, all would still have been fine.. IF, if I have a phaser issue again, and who knows with the 5.4, I will be repairing it myself.

Sorry your son is having this issue.
