5.4 timing chain tensioners
had a mechanic look at my truck and he told me the timing chain tensioners were leaked out and had ruined my cams anyone else ever had this issue to me it sounds like a phaser issue but the knocking do not go away at 2000 rpm im told i have to replace my engine because it will be cheaper than doing the tensioners and cams

Just had a similar problem except my 04 super cab with 215000 miles on it jumped time thus needing a timing set. With my work schedule I didn't have time to do it so I took it to a good friend of mines shop. By the time he did the timing set and new phasers he was able to pull my motor rebuild it and put it back for only 1000 more than just doing the timing set. Not sure if this helps but...

I just bought the complete timing kit off amazon for $120 or something and swapped it in myself over a lazy weekend.
Both of my tensioners were bleeding oil pressure which caused 2 of the 4 timing chain guides to break. Luckily no major damage.
I doubt your cams are ruined by this. A way to check is to pull the VCT seal and stick a screwdriver on the timing chain and push to see if it moves. If there is slack in the chain, you're tensioners are toast.

That price for the timing set is obsurd. Dealership prices for the timing set including phasers is 1k. You can find them off brand much cheaper-I hope you recived much more for 2100.

If U got 250,000 miles on it yes, if U got 90,000 replace the phasers and such.

I just had to replace the whole timing setup 2 weeks ago and had the shop install lockouts instead of replacing the phasers and it was $2,374.00. Both seals were bad so when I would build oil pressure at higher speeds (45+) the seals wouldn't hold the pressure therefor causing the cam timing to retard and I kept misfiring (with no CEL). Mine is an 06' 5.4 with 90k miles.
They also had to replace both cats which was $825
