Default 5.4 Exhaust Questions

Ok my truck is bone stock and I figured it was about time for a exhaust upgrade. I don't want to buy a system because I can weld and have a pipe bender and I figured it'd save me a little money to do it on my own. Does anybody have any suggestions for mufflers and how to split the back into duals coming out below the bumper(X-Pipe, Y-Pipe etc)? Also I've heard some about making sure you still have back pressure, what's essential to that? I'm guessing that only applies to people who have no mufflers but idk.

It's not backpressure you're looking for, it's actually maintaining exhaust velocity. 2.5" should be plenty if you're going with duals. Here's Flowmaster's recommendations:

If your thinking of doing duals out the back, buy a single in dual out muffler and work off that. Instead of a single in single out and a x or y pipe.

OK cool thanks for the help and I haven't seen the single in dual out, I'll check that. Everybody I know has glasspacks on their truck so I haven't really heard about much besides those.

I have a magnaflow Si/Do setup. I bought the muffler for like 80 bucks, and had it welded in at a local shop. Total cost was like 300 installed with the stainless tips and stainless muffler. Its the 18". Sounds like a truck should. Aggressive on the outside, minimal noise inside, no drone at highway speed. See my link.
