5.4 Engine replacement

Well I went back and bought the truck today. Wont be towed home til tomorrow. I was incorrect in my original thought. The hole is in the aluminum valve cover. cant be seen very well from up top. You have to be looking up thru the wheel well. Thats how I saw it and I guess thats how I was mixed up about it.

Wow, as dirty and muddy as I get, I would never let my truck get that bad. My old Jeep on the other hand, rarely had the top or doors on. There would be an inch of mud inside several times a year!

I pulled the codes off of the truck today and have P0340 p0344 p0345 p0349
I also added 5 qrts of oil just to get it on the dipstick, and it now runs quiet. But starts to idle rough when warm, and then it starts really dumping oil either out of the hole in the valve cover or somewhere else. For a good 2-3 min it was just a light slinging of oil coming out of the valve cover but then all of a sudden I looked under the truck and there was a big puddle under it. Weird tho because I dont see that much coming out of the valve cover on, so theres either another hole lower on the cover that I cant see, or the oil is coming out of somewhere else once its warmed up.
But the good news is it makes a very minimal amount of noise so Im hopeful that all I need to do is figure out if and why the chain got loose and put the hole in the valve cover

A good starting point for you would be to clean the whole truck inside and out. Then clean the engine compartment the best you can and take off the valve cover with the hole in it and see what is going on in there. If the truck is still running and doesn't make any weird noises its worth checking under the valve cover before pricing anything.

I was going to clean the truck up, but decided ill do that after I get the engine fixed. I pulled the valve cover off today and found a lot of slop in the chain. After looking at the inside of the valve cover I can see that the chain was wearing on it until it must have started to wear thru and then popped a hole in the cover. It also looks like theres a groove worn around the phaser? not sure what was riding on it to do that.

Can anyone tell me if a loose timing could cause the p0340 p0344 p0345 and p0349 codes? Seems to me like it could, or that cam position sensor was also bad or obviously bad connection. I also noticed a piece of the top chain guide (white part) is broken off.
Also does anyone know if these valve covers fill up with enough oil for the oil to have all been leaking out this hole?
I wouldve prefered to ran the truck thru a carwash and blasted all the oil out of the engine bay before starting on it but I wasnt able to since I had it towed home, and my garage doesnt have a floor drain so I didnt want to get it all wet so I get to deal with an oily engine compartment for now
