Default 5.4 Cam Phaser Lockout - does it work?

I have a stock 04 F150 SCrew with the dreaded "dieseling" noise from the cam phasers. I'm planning on buying the full cam phaser lockout kit. Just wondering if anyone else has installed these and if they resolved the noise. I would hate to spend the time installing these if they wont make a difference.

Well it keeps the phaser from advancing or retarding so it would be like a regular cam gear so I doubt it would make noise.

The lockouts only limit cam travel from 60 degrees to 20. They still move and can make noise. You would also need a custom tune.

Ok so now my question is what the heck is a cam phaser exactly. I even have mechanics that dont know this. Ford apparently is the only truck with them but why

I read up on the cam phaser issue before buying my '07 but don't know a lot about them. Notice the last sentence.....
If the phaser is already bad, installing the limiters won't fix the noise, so a full lockout may be your only choice.

Cam phasers increase fuel efficiency. The diesel noise may be the VCT solenoid

Try this. The solenoids go bad causing a ticking which gets confused with the phasers.

Could be noisy fuel injectors too. If the noise is noticeably from the top of the engine, chances are it's the injectors.

Watch the 5.4 VCT operation and theory episode for a good explanation. Figuring out what noises are normal and which are abnormal is the biggest challenge people confuse.

Otto has the best link to the VCT operation. I do not believe you can buy a kit to fully lock the phasers. I have read somewhere that a guy welded his phasers so they were locked all the time. Seems silly to me as you will lose all the fuel, emissions, and power efficiencies they offer. VCT is a great concept just not executed the best by ford.
