5.4 to 6.8 swap. And, yes, i am serious.
Just trying to do my homework thoroughly before i start so i know what i'm getting into. I have a friend with an F-350 and a highly modded V-10 and i told him how wicked his sounded under power and too bad when i swap my engine i couldnt upgrade. He said it had been done, so now i'm considering it since i can get an 05 3v 6.8 with computer and all accessories for $2500. So here are some of my main concerns:
- Will the automatic handle the V10 torque, or should i swap out for a different one? I know i have the smaller of the two autos available for the 05 model (4r100?)
- can the computer be flashed to run the V10 or should i just swap it with the v-10 and be done with it, and if so, will the V10 ECU interface with the rest of the wiring on my truck?
- clearance for headers? I know the stock manifold are pretty compact but will a set of excursion/E350/F250 headers work?
- I'm pretty sure that a high end electric fan will be neccessary but will the radiator for the 5.4 handle the job of cooling?
- intake manifold on the 05 and up v10 is abs. I know there are companies out there that make sheetmetal ones but are they worth the performance gain or should i stick with stock unless i decide to turbo...

Get the tranny that came with the 6.8, it will make things a lot easier for you. You'll need the ECU reflashed and probably a custom program burned. The exhaust should fit fine, and you can probably even use the standard fan, since the 6.8 is only 2 pistons longer than the 5.4.
This link, from the other site, should help.

Good luck!

Curious to see what SRT you plan to be killing? Maybe a crossfire SRT6?
Either way, sounds like a nice project you've got lined up. I'll definitely keep an eye out for the build thread!

Oh yeah, forgot to mention you can buy a bolt-on supercharger for it

So the same ECU is compatible with the V10? Just plug, flash, and play?
as for the transmission i wanted to keep the same gear ratios that i have now as long as my trans will handle the torque. What about the engine mount locations?

I don't think that your tranny will live up to the V10s torque...

The powertrain lineup for 2005 includes:
6.8-liter Triton V-10 – for the first time, Ford’s aluminum 3-valve cylinder head, introduced on the 2004 F-150, is available on a V-10 engine. The new 6.8-liter, 3-valve Triton V-10 is the most powerful gasoline engine in the class, with 355 horsepower and 455 pound-feet of torque"
There's a simple trick to the motor mounts, read through that first link to camdenlakes thread.

I don't think it's quite as simple as plug, flash, play, but it's pretty close. Another guy did the V10 swap and had his computer set up by 5 Star Tuning.

Ok so ive located a guy who bought a bare RV chassis rigged for the 6.8 and it's backed with what looks to be the appropriate torqueshift tranny. BRAND NEW 0 MILEs and i think i might be able to get the whole rig, engine, trans, wiring and ecu for $3k-3500(booya) whichs beats the hell out of the other deal i was thinking which would be a complete take out from an 05 F350 with 70,000 miles and no transmission for 3000. If that works out, what rear end gear do i need to set up with to accommodate for the steep gearing on the torqueshift? Thanks for the help man keep the info comin cause i'm thirsty.
