If you use the recommended oil and stay up on the oil change intervals, most of the 5.4 issues never materialize. Don't try to out smart the engineers, stick to the 5W20 semi-syn. The cam phaser issues predominantly stem from the use of the wrong oil and over extended intervals. Changing the phasers/tensioners/chains/guides is a pretty big job and I'm sure the previous owner would have pointed it out, had the job been done. The plugs can be a problem if not changed soon enough. They get carbon built up below the threads and stick coming out. There are proceedures to alleviate most of this issue if you just do a little searching on this site. The 5.4 is a good, durable engine but it has a couple special needs, --- don't we all.
