You can run vacuum and disengage the front wheels but the TC will still be locked in whatever gear it is in like mine, in stuck in 4hi and replaced everything to do with the 4x4 system and can't the front tires to disengage

Hey guys,
I am kinda at my witts end.. long time lurker of these forums and need some help.

I have a 04 4x4 5.4, full side 4 door..
I lifted it 6 inches. when I went to drive for the first time, there was a loud buzzing sound around 50+.. I took of the front driveshaft and the noise was completely gone.

I was told because the lift, my driveshaft needed to be balanced, and a CV joint was added. I put the shaft back on, and still have the same issue.
I am trying to find out what is causing this.
I replaced the front solenoid on the firewall, it was original.
seems like I have vacuum, I am not sure if the front wheel ends are stuck in 4x4 mode? I have been driving around with no front drive shaft on for about 3 weeks now.

When I grab the flange on the back of the front differential, in 2wd, I cant move it. Is this normal?
trying to find out if I have stuck wheel ends (3 bolt item vac lines go to)... or If its a transfer case issue. It seems to go into 4x4/low/high,etc.. just fine, I can hear it click, lights work...
Anyway, any help would be GREAT!!

OP, Are these the actuator vacuum vents that are in your drawing?

I am trying to track down my IWE problem and found these.
I have the full size images too if anyone wants those.

Default Yank the lines and try?

So, after some backyard mechanics and reading a few guides on here, I find that cutting the vacuum to the iwe's will in theory, engage 4wd. I can hear my shift motor click when I turn the dial, good, the 4x4 light comes on, still good, I yank the lines off the iwe's, get in and mat the throttle in reverse and leave trenches with the back wheels. Put everything back the way it was, run down the road in 2wd and I get the grindy noises from the driver side iwe. It needs replaced doesn't it?

Sounds like the wheels are locked in from what I've been reading.

Other than that.. If it's lifted, we're the vacuum lines lengthened? If they crack or kink you're losing vacuum making it lock up.

If it's a mud truck, once a line comes off and sucks water or mud up that could cause problems with vacuum.

And the only other thing I can think of is the angle of the pinion. I hear tell of guys having to shim their diffs to make everything straight, thereby cutting vibration.

Default Thanks For the Info

I was having problems with my actuators not working properly, so got 2 new ones and installed them today, all good now. Only took a few hours and serviced the brake pins at the same time so I should be all good now for the winter.

Cheers

Default Im at a loss now

OK first of all hi guys. this thread has been great.
Second I seriously need some help.

When I have my 06 f150 lariat engaged in 4x4 everything works fine if you just accelerate at a normal speed and cruise along. As soon as you give it a great deal amount of throttle/power I get a grinding noise from the drivers side wheel area. I used this thread to try and diagnose the problem and so far have had no luck. I have replaced the hub, actuator, and CV axle, and vacuum solenoid on the firewall and it still does it. Help. I'm at my wits end.....
