Im new to this forum and new to my truck. Ive got a 2005 F150 FX4 and when I go from 2hi to 4hi the indicator light flashes but does not stay on. It is the electric turn **** shifter. It is fairly obvious from the change in steering that the four wheel drive is on. I have asked around and have heard that it could be an actuator. any ideas?

I have an 04 lariat 5.4 4x4. Ever since i bought the truck back in Feb. the hubs have been making a metallic "grinding" noise my mechanic sent it to Ford and Ford couldn't fix it. All vacuum lines checked ok according to Ford as well as the hubs themselves held vacuum and they replaced the vacuum check valve, which had a small leak, but did not fix the issue. The inner hub seal was replaced on both hubs and that did not fix the issue although it did seem to quite it up a bit.
The truck has over 170k miles on it can the hubs be worn out and need replacing entirely?
I am not sure but i figure they checked the iwe solenoids.
I have no issues using the on fly shifting 4wd engages with no issues.
It only makes this noise driving up a good grade from 60-70 MPH. If i roll in the throttle I can change the frequency of the noise or if i let off it goes away, and comes back when i reapply the throttle.
Any suggestions?

Thanks for the help. I checked the front drive shaft, it doesn't spin when 4x4 engaged. I followed the vacuum hoses as far as I could, no sign of leak/damage. The open line running down to bottom of truck is not clogged. I put all four corners on jack stands. When running in 2wd, front wheels don't spin, but when I manualy spin passenger wheel, I hear the grinding. When 4x4 in engaged, wheels spin and no grinding. My guess is the actuator is bad. Am I on track or not?

transfer case isue
I have a 1997 f-150 4x4. It is not a shift on the fly 4x4. It has the shifter in the floor. My problem is that the truck was put into 4 wheel low and now I cannot get it out of low range gear. It will go back and forth between 4 and 2 wheel drive but the transfer case stays in low range. There is no motor on the transfer case as it is not on the fly. The only vaccuum hose on the case is factory capped. There is however a clicking sound when trying to shift between modes. The only thing I see on the tranfer case is some type of electrical switch of some sort right below where the vaccuum line would be hooked up. I have tried backing up and changing from low to high but that is not working. The truck remains in low range whether in 4 or 2 wheel drive. Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated.

me too
I am starting to have this problem. I saw on a you tube video to disconnect at the first check valve to eliminate any further damage it may be causing. I havnt wrenched on a truck in years and not looking forward to it. I was surprised there were not to many threads about this topic. I will try to post some pictures thru my repair on this.

2004 F150 6.4L 4WD.
I haven't gone through the checks on this page yet as my 4WD works when I engage it. What has been happening lately is that I occasionally get a grinding when I'm going down the road around 50 mph or so. I have a 4WD lever on the floor. I shift it into 4wd and the noise goes away. I put it back into 2wd, it shifts out and the noise stays gone for a while. I know nothing about the transfer case on this truck. Does it disengage at the wheels like this article mentions? I had always assumed that everything up front was locked in and that the transfer case connected when I put it into 4WD.
I have less that 40K on this truck and I don't shift between 2wd or 4wd all that often. Probably a bit stiff feeling.
Thanks for any advice.
John

Manual transfer case.
If you have a manual transfer case, couldn't you leave the front axle engaged since putting the transfer case in 2wd would disengage the front drive shaft?
