4x4 not engaging
Went to use 4x4 this week when I turned the dash **** nothing happened. No lite on the dash no engagement. Checked all the fuses ok. 4x4 worked last winter. 2005 f150 lariat 5.4 auto

Same thing happened to me last week during 10 inch snow storm. I read on a forum that if you tapped on the transfer case solenoid and actuator with a rubber mallet (I used a small piece of wood) it may free up. It did, I switched it on/off a dozen times today. I don't know if it will keep working, but will make a habit of working the switch at least once a month.

4 wheel drive
i know this might sound weird but i had a automatic ford ranger and i had the same problem. with it being as cold as it has been it could be that your battery just doesnt have enough cranking amps to engage the four wheel drive. i changed my battery and it fixed the problem. just a suggestion. good luck

he is saying that maybe your battery doesnt have enough amps while powering everything else to engage your electric motor on the transfer case, i could see this happening if you battery is old or weak, or your alternator is not charging good, just depends on what all youve got drawing on your battery

Haywire, I had the very same problem as yours, FWD wouldn't engage in high or low and indicator light did not come on, turned out to be the transfer case shift motor. Took it to the dealership and had them check it.
My local Ford dealer had replaced it under warranty, otherwise the cost on the motor is about $450.00. . As HiOffcr said I would also check the IWE solenoid.
