Default 4x4 high not working, 4x4 low does

I have a 2004 Ford F150 4x4 crew cab with the 5.4 engine. I have recently been having problems with my 4 wheel drive. When I start my truck my 4x4 high and 4x4 low lights come on, on the dash. When I turn my **** to 4x4 high the 4x4 high doesn't engage and the light doesn't come on. I can turn it to 4x4 low and it does engage. What do I need to change to fix my problem?

Why would putting it in neutral help with 4H?mine is shift on the fly unless I want 4L then I have to stop and throw it in neutral.

This is a common issue with the 04-05's they fixed the problem in 06. I do not remember the name of the part but was having the same problem a couple of winters ago. Basicly there is a vacuum housing that sits on the fire wall just behind the battery. It is a small black plastic cylinder with i belive three vacuum hoses coming our if it. Basicly what happens if water runs off the hood and into the rain channel and some gets in the cylinder blocking the vacuum valve. In 06 they made the same part but put a protective hood over it, thus preventing the water run off from getting into the valve. If you do a search of posts that i have comented on it might be easier to find.

After finding the name of the part just tell the parts guy at your dealership you want the 06 or newer version ( it is a direct swap) sorry dont remember how much it cost but thinf it was under $50.

toole05- I always put it in neutral when shifting between 4hi, lo, and 2 hi. Just common practice that my dad taught me many years ago.

KC5-0- Awesome! Thank you so much I have had a bad feeling that it would be the locking solenoid and from what you have described that would be it because it is high on the firewall. My next thing after that would have been the drive actuators.

Thank you all so much again, any input and help is another thing I can eliminate. I will probably just turn this into my play truck in the next year or so. I basically only use it hunting and fishing anyhow.

I don't see how you can go into 4L without being in 4H first...

Tech rep- I don't understand how the high isn't working either I found it really weird myself. That is why I asked for advice and to see of anyone has had this problem.
