Default 4wd problem!

I know there are like 5 threads about 4wd issues, but mine doesnt fit into any of the categories.

I have a 2004 F150 Fx4. 177k miles...

My 4L works fine and engages perfectly, but my 4H will only flash the light one time or not at all and will not engage most of the time. Occassionally it will engage. Like once a year it might. Hooked the Snap On scanner up to and it and it had a code "communication malfunction". Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks ahead

I had this same issue on my 04 super crew, with the 4H sometimes flasing or not at all. I just took it in on Friday and expect it to be done today or tomorrow, so hopefully they can tell what was wrong and what they did to fix it so I can post it.

Ha, sounds about right!
So got the truck back today and I asked him about it, he said that it had to do with the sensor on the hub by the wheel. So I'm not sure what there is down there, but thats all it was. The mechanic said he had two other trucks come in this last week with the same problem and they all had to do with a sensor.

Hope that helps you out some in fixing yours!

OK here is some info for you guys that have problems with your pre 07 electronic 4wd. I talked to my friend at Ford and he said that the reason these trucks get stuck in and out of 4wd is the solenoid for the front hubs. The original design lets condensation into the vacuum system and corrodes the solenoid and hubs. The 07 and up trucks do not have this problem as they redesigned the system to keep it water tight. My trucks front hubs are engaged all the time due to this bad solenoid. I am having it repalced this week.

The solenoid only controls the locking of the front hubs, it does not control the transdfercase. If you have shift on the floor you manually engage the tcase, but are still having to engage the hubs with the same vacuum solenoid. So most likely it is the same issue.
