Thumbs up 4WD not engaging and no 4WD indicator on dash

This is a 2006 F150. I tried to engage the 4WD and nothing happened, no light on the dash for either 4H or 4L. All the fuses were good, I even pulled the center of the dash around the stereo off (replaced factory stereo with a nice supertuner, 300w alpine amp, and subwoofer, nice....) to make sure the shift switch was still pluged in.

Long story short, pull the motor off the tranfer case (3 10mm bolts and another 10mm holding the motor on) engage the switch on the dash from 2W to 4H, rotate the shaft to 4H (says 4H on the housing and you can use an adustable wrench w/o damaging the shaft (dont force it if it doesn't turn easily) a couple of times, then put it back together.

I read this on another post and it is a snap. I did this in 6 inches of snow with 2 inches an hour coming down. It was cold but easy enough to do.
Cheers

I hit my transfer case with a rubber mallet and it's worked fine ever since. Just be sure to engage your 4wd at least once a month or so just to keep everything functional in between necessary uses.

Is this a sign of a bad transfer case motor? Doesn't seem right that it just stops working... then starts again... maybe its failing?

Sounds like the 4x4 actuator. It's the electric motor on your transfer case that engages/disengages 4x4 when you turn the switch on your dash. Mine went out on my '06 and a new Motorcraft replacement with labor was about $300 at the dealer.

Also check your IWE Solenoid (passenger side against firewall). Mine shorted out and provided the exact same symptoms.

I hope thats not the reason my 4x4 isn't engaging (turning the switch literally does NOTHING audibly or visually), because I just changed my IWE solenoid for a new motorcraft part 4 months ago.
