4WD Mechanism Service
Hi All, After a really long time procrastinating, I started doing some overdue maintenance on my 05. Spent a couple of days getting the spark plugs and fuel injectors, then decided to fix the brakes.
When I got down to the front hubs, I decided I'd pull he CV halfshafts out. They were never cleaned up after the hurricane almost two years ago, but the truck wasn't used much, and it worked OK. Anyway, it has been shifting poorly into 4Hi, and 4Low was really getting bad.
The knuckle looks pretty bad, but it seems structurally sound. The lock mechanism looks pretty icky, and I want to re-lubricate it, and the mating part (IWM?...the thing with the hoses that is the modern equivalent of getting out and turning the hub lock). Is re-lubrication do-able?
Any advice is greatly appreciated!
TIA
Pat

Hub Lube
I got time today to look at the hub. I think it may get destroyed by taking it apart, so I came up with this little method to get the old icky grease and hurricane remnants out.
I put a grease fitting in a rubber tube, and stuck it in the speed sensor hole, as the picture shows. I squirted in some Mobil XHP222, and rotated the hub to put some more grease in. Eventually, it pushed out the old stuff, and popped off the plastic "disclaimer" ring. I wiped off the old grease. Hub seems to spin OK. We shall see. I pushed the plastic disclaimer ring back to the seated position with a 1" chisel.
