Default 4WD doesnt work when it snows!!!!

Last year, we got a little snow and the 4wd worked fine. I drove around in it all day no problems. Woke up the next morning and the light came on on the dash when I turned the **** but it wouldnt engage. A day or so later, it would engage. This year, same thing. Could something be freezing or could snow or ice be getting in some component keeping it from engaging. it seems to not work at the most inconvinient times. When it doesnt work, i do notice a griding/popping/noise from the front end. Any thoughts... By the way, it is a 2005 lariat 4wd.

sounds like you have a bad 4x4 vaccum solenoid had the same thing happen to me except mine kept trying to engage itself into 4wheel drive and made the same grinding and popping noise my brother who is a ford tech fixed it for about ithink 15-20 bucks and took him about 15 minutes to fix!!

Yep, me too. Vacuum solenoid on the passenger's side of the firewall, I bought the part from the dealership and switched them out in about 6 min. Very simple and inexpensive fix.
