Default 4 wheel Drive Switch flaw?

So i have a 2005 FX4, i have had endless problems with my 4wd. Had the actual switch replaced when it was under warranty, even since it has been very spotty. Works one day but not the next.

The senior technician at my local ford dealership claims that the 4wd will not work if you dont switch it on every once in a while (at least once a month he said). And it was going to cost $600 to fix. I was so furious at him and Ford for admitting a design flaw and not recalling or fixing it for free. I ended up finding out that when it wouldnt kick into 4wd, i would try it in reverse..and then it would kick into 4WD.....that tricked worked for 2 years. Now that trick doesnt work i am stuck with a 2 wheel drive truck.

Is the 4 wheel Drive design in 05 model a flaw? If so, any tricks to fix it? PLease help..

I have a 2003. It only goes into 4 WD if I go into reverse after 4wd is selected. It will only go back to 2wd if I go into reverse after I de-select it. My mechanic says that the problem is in the front axel and will take about $800.00 to drop the front axel and find the problem.

What did they say was wrong with the axle? I ask this because my truck started doing this exact same thing.

I never found out. He showed me a diagram of the front axel and told me they would have to drop it to find the problem. It has yet to be fixed.
