Default engine swap

Hey everyone
I have a 2008 f150 xlt its a nice truck but it has a 4.6 liter engine along with only 2wd this was not my choice it was my dads choice. its my first car but we got real cheap because it was at the Honda dealership from a trade in. it is in almost perfect condition i don't believe whomever owned before me really used much. anyway I'm wondering is it possible to put a 5.2 liter engine in it and possibly make it 4wd. i realize this would be very difficult and probably cost more in the long run but i thought it might be a challenge and fun
so ignoring the price is this possible and if so how much customization would need to be done
Thanks
Mike

The 5.4 will bolt up without much modification. As far as the 4wd you will need a new front axle, a transfer case, a shorter drive shaft, a drivshaft to go to the front axle, and a whole bunch more I'm sure.

Possible yes, and very costly. In addition to the items listed by Turkey Hunter you would need the actuator motor, the actuator, switch, relays, fuses, harness, maybe different brakes (they are different stock 2wd verses 4wd), and possible steering mods, as well as PCM reflash if it would even accept it.

Not meant in a bashing way, but if your dad is picking out your vehicle for you then I'm guessing it is a safe bet you're young and don't have a job that pays enough to actually do this insane transformation. To do all that work it would be more cost-effective to just trade your truck in and buy a 5.4 4wd. Think real REAL long and hard before you get started on this.

x2. By know means bashing this. It would be one heck of a project and you would learn more about this truck than you wanna know but it would be super expensive. Now if you had a totaled 4wd from a junk yard and you could simply unbolt parts and carry them over to your truck then this might be feasible and somewhat affordable.

the 2wd and 4wd trucks have different frame rails up front from what i remember. it would be easier to put a solid axle under the front but you're going to have to know how to weld very well and know how to set up an axle right.

depending on how cheap you got the truck these two swaps are going to probably out cost the entire truck.

id really keep the 4.6 in it too. right now your in school? not really using your truck for work, just a commuter. run the 4.6 and itll use less gas and be mechanically reliable, unlike it would be after you changed the engine with it always popping codes and whatnot
