Long story short, got a 05 f150 4.6 crew cab for a steal and man that thing is a dog. Figured it might have a missfire, nope. Still a dog after coils and plugs.

I've read a little on the programmers but not sure how much that'll help. The damn truck will barley spin the rear tire if I really try. Could it be something else or is this really how they come stock

Ford's do a great job of "hooking up". Hard to even spin the tires on a 5.4. Trucks should apply power to the ground and not spin their tires. You should clean your MAF and throttle body. Wont hurt to get a new fuel filter and 2 new upstream oxygen sensors.

this is all true

but nah they don't do an optimum job of moving those trucks quick.

Yes, the 4.6 is a dog. But it's a reliable dog. Sometimes I miss my old 4.6 however, I can't gripe about my 5.4. Both engines have been good to me over the years

Don't get me wrong, I'm not expecting a race truck haha. I just didn't know what to expect from it. If something else could be the lack of power because well, it is a v8. But if the case is that it is a dog it'll explain it!

Add a tune, electric fans, and a different rear end ratio and id bet it wont feel like a dog anymore

these engines feel way more powerful in the old round nose trucks - I think a large part of it may well be the electric throttle in the 04+ (throttle lag seems common in the 04-08s, the new ones retain electric throttle, and seem to lack that issue) as well as they are heavier trucks. a tuner is supposed to help with the former, as well as make a huge difference in power. many 11th gen 4.6 owners say a tuner really waked up their truck.

I'll second this... Driving my boss' 98 SCAB was night and day difference to driving my 05. I always just chalked it up to gearing. Mine had 3.55... I always wanted to change it out to 3.73 but never did.

I dualed mine out had a tune put on it and woke it up. As for as spinning your tires it will when you tune it, but if you are racing you want it to grip instead of spin.
