4.2 to 5.4. Can it be done?
First let me start by stating I love my truck. However, in my Rush to get a new truck, I didn't do my research, and settled for a 4.2 because I thought it would get better fuel economy. Now I have an oil leak. It's not large, small enough to where I only notice it on te smooth concrete floor of my shop. Not a single leak that can be fixed, but it turns out most of the gaskets on the engine will need replaced in using head gasket and things like that, which will cost 1300-1500 in repairs.
I like the 4.2, but for only a couple less mpg, I wouldn't mind having something with some more *****. That bein said, is it reasonable to put a 5.4 in a stx that had a 4.2? What would I be looking at as far as labor costs? Thanks

What transmission do you have behind the 4.2? If its an automatic, then it would have to be swapped out for the larger one used in the 4.6 (with tow package) and 5.4's. If you have the standard transmission (only available in the 4.2), I doubt that would hold out in the 5.4 either.
Anything can be done, but it would be best to have the 5.4 donor vehicle at the location where the swap would be done. The ECU/PCM, wiring looms, etc that you don't have on the 4.2 V6 will need to be swapped out as well. The little stuff can always bite you.
