Hey everyone,

Do you know if Ford or anyone else sells the gasket for the 3rd brake light separate from the actual light assembly? I have been searching online and have called my local dealership but the parts guy seems determined to sell me the whole light, which I don't need.

I put some automotive weather stripping on as a temporary fix but I know all to well the kind of damage a failed seal can create.

i took mine off and silly coned it. no leaks.

It's just a foam gasket...the automotive weatherstripping should work fine.

Yeah i was going to silicone it too, but was afraid of sticking it to the paint and not being able to get it off to change the bulbs.

Hopefully the weatherstripping does the trick. It's supposed to rain for 3 days starting tomorrow, so I'll be finding out if it works soon enough.

Gasket is not available seperately. If you use silicone, use a SMALL bead, allow it to set (follow the directions) before you apply.

The reason why folks have such a tough time with this stuff is that they apply a large bead, anbd then immediately apply it to the mated surface. When you do this, it acts like epoxy, and not a sealer/gasket.

Yeah I think I'm going to go out and put down a line of silicone around the weatherstripping i put on. I got to head down to the hardware store to get a tube of RTV silicone.

I used the regular weather stripping you would use on a door to your house that opens to the outside. no RVT or silicone. no leakes and it been 6 months.

When you put the weather stripping down did you go around the entire light in one piece, and if you did, does it bend well around corners?

I used some thin stuff. it was one piece but I cut it at an angle and overlaped it at the ends so when I tighten it down it compressed well. it kind of wrinkled in the corners but I havent had an issue.

after i resealed my rear window with 3M butyl tape i used some of the left over tape to seal the third brake light. the butyl tape will allow you to remove the light if need be. they sell it at any auto body supply store.
