Default Transmission problem??

Hi guys,

Long time lurker, first time poster...but having a small problem and would like to get the masses opinions on it.

I had an 04 Supercab that i got into an accident with and it was totaled out last month. I recently picked up a 2005 Super Crew 5.4 as a replacement and have discovered something that was not evident on the test drive.

When going up an incline at roughly 20 MPH, when you put your foot into it, the transmission downshifts like it normally would...however, its got a pretty heavy "clunk" to it when it shifts from 3rd down to 2nd...doesnt do it in any other gear shifts, just from 3rd to 2nd and only seems to do it on an incline. I couldnt replicate the problem on a level or down graded road but can easily on an incline. Found this while coming up a mountain road....if you very, very slowly roll on the throttle, it does not do it but if you put your foot into it a little bit(not running it hard by any means...id say just normal driving) it clunks pretty hard and you can feel it in the entire driveline.

Is this a common problem? According to the factory records the previous owner gave me, the OD went out in it about 10K ago(it has 60K on the truck) and was fixed by Ford and had the tranny serviced...any idea what might be causing this?

Thumbs up

Can't remember what it's called, but its the gear or whatever that lines up and shifts your tranny between gears. I think there is a seperate one for between R and 1st, 1st and 2nd, and so forth. Yours might be worn out. Does your truck make this clunk if you start going uphill slowly in 2nd and then throttle it up a bunch so that it eventually shifts to 3rd? I would assume that it would clunk on the 2nd to 3rd shift if it does it from 3rd to 2nd but you never know. If it does not clunk from 2nd to 3rd than maybe it's not the tranny at all but something else like your driveshaft or, well, something. I hope for your sake it's not the tranny. Those things are expensive and annoying to deal with.
