Default Cam phaser question

So I just realized I am another fallen victim to the cam phaser. My questions are:

How big of an issue is this? Don't really care for the noise

And

I am military and will be driving to texas soon from California, will this be ok?

Thanks guys

Some drive them for years making like a diesel. Some break right away putting pieces into the crankcase. Some fight M for months never getting them right. Personally if U want to trade it to a good dealer for a new one ? If U have the time to go into it and fix it ? Very bad noises? Very intensive to fix usually. Clicking is injectors, clanking is VCT related and timing cover related.

Just did mine a week ago. It took me 3.5 days, but I'm not a mechanic. I could probably do it again in half the time. The thread " Final repair guide to cam phaser ticking" helped a lot. I drove with the noise for at least 2 years.

It's not hard at all... I would recommend pulling the front cover just for ease of inspection..

I just did a total rebuild on a 2006 5.4L and it wasn't bad at all...
