I figured out my 04' 2wd is a Heavy Duty model with the 6 lug hub/rotor. The hub is one piece factory pressed with rotor.
I took the tire and wheel off. I noticed I could move the rotor a little back and forth..... Not so much left and right but it does wiggle if you grab top and bottom and wiggle it.





Through research I did find one guy who said his mechanic was able to service the bearings without buying a whole new rotor.

I figured it was worth a shot. If it doesnt work, I still have to buy a new rotor assembly but if it does work, I"m good..

I removed the cotter pin, the castle nut, and the hub/rotor assembly (one-piece).

I removed the snap ring carefully without damage and pressed out the bearings and race. Dis-assembled the bearings and cleaned, inspected, and re-greased after watching countless videos online how to do that the right way. I'm pretty confident I got it right.

I didnt notice any damage went ahead and re-assembled. I put the rotor assembly back on the spindle and re-used the axle nut. (I know it say dont re-use) but I'm just testing my repair. If the repair worked, then I would go ahead and buy the $20.00 axle nut. If it didn't work, and I had bought an axle nut, I would have to remove it again to buy the new rotor and replace making me end up buying 2 axle nuts for the same side... Follow me?...

So now I've got it back on. I still feel the play in the rotor. Here's my question:

• Is it that I haven't cranked enough on the axle nut yet?
  
• Or is that the bearing assembly isn't set in enough?
  
• Or is it just a bad bearing and I can't tell?

And before anyone flames me for trying even fix it instead of just buying a new one, I lost my job and the funds aren't really there to just run and buy parts. I at least had to try to repair it before I park the truck for a while till I get another job.

If I do replace, which it's looking like I will have to, Any preference on which one or does it not really matter? I really don't like the uneducated idiots at autozone...

try to tighten a bearing nut a bit more and see if it will help.

I tried that, it didnt make a difference.... Even used a cheater bar. Went ahead and went to Pepboys and got the rotor/hub assembly for $86.00 came home and slapped it on. Problem solved. Quiet ride now.

Well, after replacing the drivers side rotor/hub, I still heard a noise I've been hearing but it's different than the clunking noise of my drivers side rotor. This noise is more of a tire humming when I'm rolling. I noticed the hum was only there when I go straight or turn left. On an interstate off ramp going right, it's quiet. Since going right the weight is rolled away from the passenger side, I figured that was it. Jacked up the pass side today and sure enough, the rotor wiggles. Looks like I need the passenger rotor too.... Weird that each side made completely different sounds, but could just be the pass side was not as bad as left... Either way, can't fix it anytime soon since I'm outa funds... This economy sucks and so does trying to find another job. __________________
