Let's see if I can help here:
Flowmaster has a variety of muffler variations (called series), the 40 Series is the most common, it is the "Flowmaster sound" you hear about. They have a variety of series with different purposes and noise characteristics:

S=Single
D=Dual
I=In
O=Out
For example, my MBRP is a SI/SO or a single in single out, so I have 1 pipe in (after the stock Y) and one pipe out (single exit). You can have a "fake" (no offense to anyone) dual exhaust by using a SI/DO muffler. Or a "true" dual with two x SI/SO or a DI/DO.
Tips are normally described by their exit diameter, their length, and the end cut. So 4x18 slashed would be 4" output, 18" long, with a slash/angled cut at the exit.
Performance aspects are very debatable (along with tubing diameter and muffler brands) as you'll find all over the forum.
