I'm not sure when they made the change but my 2011 tailgate emblem had the same rectangular tabs as the 2012 appearance pkg. tailgate embem pictured below.

The '12 are a 2 piece emblem, and there was no flairside in '12.

That's how people are customizing them. Break 'em apart and paint them however you want like this on my last F150.

By the way that's a '12 tailgate emblem it just requires cutting and sanding to sit flush.
