Just make sure you get the tailgate one with pins and everything will fit perfectly.

You won't find the 2012 FX appearance pkg. tailgate emblem with pins. The 09+ tailgate emblems have tabs on them that will have to be cut off to mount on a 04-08 tailgate. I put the 2012 FX appaerance pkg emblems on my '11. I sanded the texture off the red inserts and painted them greyish/silver.

That is entirely untrue. My tailgate badge required no modification.

The tailgate emblem that came off my 2011 didn't have algnment pins nor did the 2012 appearance pkg. tailgate emblem. It had a tab on each end with clips, like pictured below. These tabs wont fit through the alignment pin holes on older tailgates without modifying the tabs or the tailgate.

i bought the tailgate emblems for the side of my truck, i just cut off the two pins and just stuck it on with the tape.

Yes they are, I just left the dealership today and they don't make a '12 tailgate emblem with pins. They all have tabs, '09 emblems are the only ones with pins. I did however order a '12 badge that us not a tailgate badge but a side badge without the trim level tab attached. When I arrives Wednesday I will update with a pic and part number.

Have you put the "new style" emblem on the back of your 2004 truck? If so can you post a pic/ give info on the install?....
