What is the best bang for my buck to increase mileage? I have a stock 06 f150 5.4 4x4 that currently gets about 15mpg.

i have virtually the same truck. i got it up to 16 driving like my g-pa. my wife had it for two days and got it down to 14.5.

manual says to use 87 octane and no additives. from lurking these pages, 15 city mpg sounds about right for stock V8 5.4L.

gas is too spendy to go on a random road trip to see what highway miles are like.

the best bang for your buck ummmmmmmm I would have to say a tuner I've heard of mpg's from 1-3 mpg gain. cai and exhaust might help a little but they are for more the performance end of it. I saw about 1-1.5mpg increase with the later 2 as long as I can keep my foot out of the gas but thats hard.My next investment will be the SCT X3 tuner w/troyer custom tunes once I save a few more pennies

I have a 02 with a 4.6. It's listed at 13-17 but I just got 19.5 driving from Kansas to Illinois and back. It's stock for now except for a topper. I did drive like an old lady though. My advice, cover the bed and watch your driving habits. Best part is it doesn't cost you any money to keep your foot out of the accelerator.

Seriously though you can add a tuner, CAI and exhaust and squeeze out 1-3 more mpg's, but you're going to pay over $1k combined for all 3 of those mods. Gonna take you a looooooooooooong time to recoup that money in gas savings. The best part about adding those 3 mods is the performance of your truck will increase and it'll be like driving a totally different one.

accelerate slowly, anticipate traffic patterns and coast up to stop lights (look past the bumper of the car in front of you), and drive slower on highway. I have a 04 with a 5.4 three valve and on a recent trip with almost all highway miles got 18.9. I think that is pretty good for a completely stock truck with no bed cover.

I can't believe how many people race by me while I coast up to intersections and jam on their brakes at the last minute. Maybe they don't have to pay for their gas like I do. It's time the American driver wised up and pays attention to their driving habits. Or else stop complaining about gas prices.

Don't accel really slow, that lugs the engine and takes more fuel.

i did the math and last month i drove about 900 miles in my truck, and i got about 12 miles per gallon. 900miles/12mpg is 75 gallons of gas at 4.14per gallon is 310.50 in gas per month. if you are saying i can get 1-3 more mpgs ill just say 2mpg increase. 900miles/14mpg is 64 gallons of gas at 4.14 per gallon is 265 which is a savings of about 45 per month. for one year that is 540 dollars. so if i plan on keeping the truck for 2 years its worth it to put an exhaust, air intake, and tuner.

Driving conditions play a huge part in that as well. Moving to Hawaii cost me 2-3 mpg's. In Mississippi my driving was 80% hwy and 20% stop-n-go and I was getting 13-14 mpg's. Out here in Hawaii my driving is 95% stop-n-go and 5% hwy and I'm seeing right around 11-11.5 mpg's. The only good thing is I'm only putting about 300 miles a month on the truck.
