my son-n-law has 147k miles on 4wd w/5.4, 3rd is slipping and making a noise. he has been told the bearing are out in 3rd gear and is a known problem. what do you think would be involved in putting the newer 6 speed tranny. his father has 2010 5.4 4wd with the 6 speed. wondering what all would be needed.

3rd gear bearing A Known problem... and installing a 6 speed would require an ECM swap along with other not simple stuff. best bet is to have the 4 speed re-built or replaced with a re-man ..

Rebuild your transmission, it would not be cost effective to do the swap.
