2007 Strange problem with rear brakes and 4x4
Hey guys, this problem has me stumped. 2007 F150 Lariat 4x4 screw 5.4 auto 62K miles on it now.
As I'm driving, I sometimes get a lugging feeling and my brake pedal comes a bit higher than normal with more of a firm feeling. What seems to be my rear brakes are engaged as it will stop the truck if I put in in neutral. At the same time the 4x4 won't engage. I'll continue down the road for a couple of minutes and it all goes away and runs just normal 4x4 will also engage. It comes and goes and only few miles at a time. One time my steering and front end began to shake some as if the front rotors are toast, but I know they are not.
Any thoughts? Thanks.

I had this same issue about a year or two ago. Found my front calipers were seized, unfortunately that wasn't the whole problem. I also did my rear brakes and inspected the parking shoes and found them to be completely obliterated. If I remember right, I think I just replaced them and readjusted the park brake?!? Don't take my word for it, just an idea though on my own experience.. Memory isn't too great. But I'd definitely check for a dragging caliper somewhere. Do you notice any burning take smell at all? That was my cue.

Thanks for chiming in. I really don't smell burning brake smell much. I thought it was the fronts, but now I'm thinking they are the rears. But why would the 4x4 not engage?Also......as I'm driving it just goes away and runs like normal. 4x4 will also begin to work just fine. I rarely use my e-brake also....
I'll pull the rear wheels and look at the brakes....thanks.
