I also found that fix on a Mustang forum.

This sounds like what happened to mine. My issue turned out to be the phasers and the VCT Selnoids. Watch this video, he demonstrates a way to determine if the issue is the VCT selnoids.

The VCT theory makes sense. I'll start saving pennies to purchase new solenoids and valve cover gaskets. It will probably be a while though, so other suggestions are welcome, especially cheap ones.

Has anyone personally tackled the VCT replacement? some Youtube guys take the valve covers off, some just pop the VCT seal on the valve cover and reach in. If I can confirm that someone has done the swap without removing the valve covers and everything went smoothly, that saves me a few bucks and a big headache.

You could always try the "pop the VCT seal on the valve cover and reach in" method first; if that does not work for you, then remove the valve cover.

Fair, but that means either buying the valve cover gaskets to have on standby or leaving the truck torn apart until I go get the gaskets.

My new VCT solenoids actually came with new gaskets. Either way, they are real cheap, go get a set.

The VCT gaskets should be replaced no matter what. My question is: did you manage to replace the VCTs without removing the valve covers? Besides just being a PITA, removing the valve covers requires new valve cover gaskets for reassembly.
