The truck has 288xxx miles. 2007 2wd 5.4L. Only has 1st and 2nd gear. If I put it in drive and turn overdrive off then there's no engine breaking in 2nd. But if I put it directly in 2nd gear on the column then there is engine breaking. Guy that does my transmission work says the direct drum in the back of it is burnt up.. wants $1250 plus tax if I pull it and bring it to him to rebuild it... I found one on Craigslist out of an 06 2wd with 97k miles.. will it work in my truck? What's anybody else experienced with transmission issues similar to this?

Hmm. What about shift solenoids? I know there is one for first and second and another for 3rd and 4th. I know if that solenoid isn't working it won't shift into those gears. I'm not a transmission expert, just trying to give you some things to check before you fork out any huge amounts of money.

Not sure.. I'm by far no expert with transmissions at all myself. Once it shifts out of second it just slips out of gear and wraps up. 3rd and 4th just aren't there... but that does sound like something to look into. Thank you
