Default how long should one go between oil changes

I've heard so many different things from people about how long one should go before changing oil. Some say the usual 3k. Some also said 5k or 7500 miles. I just changed my oil for the first time. And since I trust all u guys from the forum.more than I trust the guy at the counter. What is ur opinion

its really self determination, really particular guys say 3k, but if you use good oil, (mobil 1 synthetic) youre FINE for 5k, more frequent changes will sound better and look better when you want to sell it.

5k is pushing it on regular oil IMO, but on a full synthetic like Mobil 1 or RP, I'd say 5k is just fine. 7500 would get into that "pushing it" range on full synthetic though if you ask me.

You'd be amazed what a full synthetic can do though. Buddy of mine was running his KTM 300 2-stroke on an enduro and lost his tranny plug at the last fill up point. He finished the race! And didnt realize it until his friend told him they found a plug at the fill up. Obviously there would be some serious wear on his tranny now, but it would have been a totally different story if that were a non-synthetic, and he would need a new bike.

Here's what I been doing since I bought it in 2004.
Every 4 months or 4,000 miles w full synthetic oil of course. Sometimes I go over that but never went over 4,500.
I've heard that most oil filters aren't suppose to go over 5,000 miles but I'm not 100% sure.

Yeah and I bought enough Royal Purple for two changes in my truck, but as often as I change oil it's a little too expensive so after this next change I'm going to swap to Mobil 1 Full Synthetic. Same benefits with much less cost.

3k for conventional oil (3 months), and 5k for synthetic (5-6 months). This are the most common recommendations, and a really good standard to go by. Yes oil can go longer but do you really wanna risk a three thousand dollar engine for 30 bucks?

What does your owners manual say? I would follow your owners manual based on your driving. For 2004 truck normal service oil change intervals are 5000 miles. Severe service is 3000 mile intervals. Use a MC filter and a good quality oil (Motorcraft Semi Synthetic)
