Default 2006 F-150 SuperCrew 5.4L Running rough

Hi everyone.

I have been reading some of the other posts on the website for others that may have experienced my problem. Notice that everyone is talking about bad injectors, gaskets etc...

Anyways, I have an 06 F-150 5.4L that I first leased for 3 years and have now just purchased the truck out. Over the first 3 years I have had a couple of times when starting the truck cold that the engine felt like it was running on one less cylinder. Just runs really rough, but would smooth out after about a minute of running. If I would step on the gas, it would puff white smoke out of the tail pipe like it was running really rich.

Well, it has been quite a while now since that happened. Today, I was out driving on a 45 MPH highway and was coming up on a stop light and decided to just let the engine brake the truck, so first turned off OD and then shifted into second gear and then to first gear and stopped. We have a lot of lights to go through and was trying to save the brakes.

Once I was stopped I noticed right away the engine started to run rough again like it had lost a cylinder. Light turned green and I started up and made my way up to 45 MPH. I did not notice any white smoke coming out of the tail pipe but the engine continued to run rough for at least a minute or two and then smoothed back out. It was fine coming home from work today.

Should I be concerned? If I take it to the dealership will they even be able to tell if there was a problem since it is not currently doing it? Any advice would help. I'm just nervous because I did not get the extended warranty and the 3 Yr bumper to bumper is up this month. I only have 24,000 miles on the truck.

Thanks!

TAKE IT IN!!! Get this logged in your history before it goes out of warranty so that it can continue (to some extent) outside warranty parameters.

Actually I just checked this morning and my 3 yr expired on the March 9th. Missed it by a day...

I will contact the dealer and see what they want to do. If it is anything, will the factory Power Train warranty cover that?

So, went to the dealer and they hooked it up to the computer, check injector pressures etc... Everything checks out. Gotta love it.

They want to keep it over night and try a cold start, but it probably won't act up. Ugh!!

I feel your pain. Mine has done this only once since I have owned it but I do feel a slight miss when in drive at idle. Nothing ever gets found but I have them check each time I bring it in for anything.

Do you notice anything on your tach? When I come up to a light mine starts to run rough just a little, then smooth back out. Watching the tach it falls from around 750 to 500 rpm and back. Now the other day I was fiddleing around and noticed that when I turn off the defrost it quites and starts doing it again when I turn the defrost back on. Anything like that with yours?

No, nothing on the tach for me. Just a "seat of the pants" feel that is noticable to all that are in the vehicle once I ask if they feel it.

I certainly do not notice anything on my tach and actually the engine runs smooth and fine at all other times. No vibrations or any of that. I did find it interesting though that right away the dealership was like is it an 05. I'm like nope, but it is an early 06.

They actually pressure checked the injectors at the dealer and they checked out. Probably a freaking computer problem. In 3 years of having the truck, it has only done it 4 times now.
