2006 5.4 ticking/tapping at start-up
I know this has been posted before, but this might help others.
Hey all, my truck has 118,000 km (73,000mi) on it and it recently developed a ticking/tapping noise from the passenger side valve cover area - but only on cold startup. I dreaded it was the cam positioner. But since I have an extended warranty I took to the dealership. Turned out to be the exhaust manifold. They replace it, the gasket and the studs. Normally an $1800 job (ouch)! Cost me the $100 deductable (whew!)
Anyways, if you have a similar thing, this video may be of help. Long but useful, it has a whole but of engine noises in it and professional ford diagnosis.

This is a good find. There are a lot of folks on this forum throwing cash at a noisy 5.4 for noises that according to this tech are mostly normal. If you're truck has a slight diesel like noise you're going to want to watch this one
