did you set pinion bearing preload at 18-26in lbs? how did you set pinion depth?
did you set backlash at .008-.012in? did you ck. backlash variation. if any of these
are off on a 9.75 it will be noisy. unless it was just a case of no friction modifier in
that case your lucky. also did you use OEM parts?

It does need friction modifier however that won't cause it to make noise in a straight line, only when turning. Yes, you need friction modifier. No, it isn't causing the rear end to whine.

Default 4x4 rear end noise

got sick of messing with it took it to a shop guy their told me the bearing races were to thick . we used the ones that came in the box with the bearings from napa , he told me i needed to get them from ford as the ones for my truck were thinner than the ones that came from napa , he also said he thought the ring and pinion we put in would be fine , although the pinion nut was a little loose .
