I put in the Ford auto headlight kit myself, its supposed to make the headlights like daytime running lights that you can adjust the intensity of, then there is a sensor that turns the lights on the whole when it gets dark out. Well the intesity thing doesnt work so its like having my headlights on all the time, which isnt a problem. And then when it does get dark it turns everything else on as well.

NITEMARE, maybe someone put that kit in your truck? Or are you the one and only owner?

Nitemare - Have you checked to make sure your sensor is not dirty/covered or disconnected, tinting the windshield would effect it to

If there is no setting then the auto headlight kit was probably put in after factory im guessing. Take a lookk under the dash and see if there is some little box just zip tied up under around the steering column somewhere.

Since it works to turn the rest of the lights on when it gets dark, I bet with a relay, wire, and a diagram you could get it to turn the headlights off during the day.

GATORB8 - thanks for your reply.

I plan to take the back seat out to access the BSM. It looks like it is on the drivers side to the right of the sliding window motor behind the seat. If it is not sealed closed, I may pop it open and look at the printed circuit board assembly for visual defects (i.e. solder defects or contamination).

Does your wiring diagram show what the input and output voltages should be? If so, I can check the voltage coming from the autolamp sensor and output voltage and monitor it while it is malfunctioning and compare it to the output of the fog/parking lamp line. Hopefully see the output voltage drop.

So the output of the BSM goes to the fuse/relay box behind the kick panel on the passenger side?

Thanks again!

Headlights don't go to the fuse box, until after combining with the switch on circuit and the high beam circuit. I'll try to convey this the best I can, the BSM Headlight Relay Output follows the following circuit:

Exits the BSM at Connector C3008B Pin 7 (Circuit 15)
Passes through connector C248 (drivers side kick panel) Pin 11 (then splices to circuits 15 & 7)
Circuit 15 is the connection between the light switch in the on position (C2150A pin 1) and the autolamp circuit
Circuit 7 continues to the Multifunction (highs) Switch.

No voltages on the diagrams, but here's the pinpoint test:

You rock! This is awesome stuff and will save me a lot of time!

I will try this diagnostic check. If H3 points me to the BSM (which I bet it does), I will have to see if I can open it to access pin 7 on C3008A and montior the voltage level while it is malfuctioning vs. normal operation. Since it is an intermittent condition, I'm crossing my fingers that it is something simple like some corrosion on a GND or pin that I can clean off or connector harness not fully inserted. The truck did have a problem with a leaky back window that soaked my seat several times before I got it fixed...so maybe that is related.

btw, what is the document you are referencing and is it available anywhere?
