2005 5.4 F150 Automatic (lost drive & OD)
I have lost drive and overdrive. I have first and second and when I let off the gas pedal everything seems normal. When I am in drive with overdrive switched off and keep a steady speed it doesn't shift into drive. When I let off the gas in drive the tach goes to 1k and its like I'm in neutral. If I switch OD on it's like neutral and the engine revs. I have pulled the pan and valve body and do not see any metal. OD snap ring is intact. Fluid looks good with no burnt smell...I'm thinking shifting solenoids but have not tested them yet. There is no grinding noise at all and no slipping in first and second gears.
It threw cam sensors codes and I replaced both but I think that was from the neutral condition and test drove before dropping the pans and still no shifting to drive or OD.
Regards,
Robert

Pull the positive lead on the battery and reset the ECU. Had this happen to a Taurus, Company sold it cheap due to no OD, dealer said it needed a new trans. Guy bought it for $500, reset the ECU, worked fine afterwards. Worth a shot!

That would be nice if just resetting the ecu fixed the problem. I currently have the pan and valve body apart because I suspected a broken snap ring. I have lost drive and overdrive.
The snap ring that usually breaks is the OD and its still intact and not broken.

loss of 3rd and 4th gear means the direct clutch has failed, the intermediate shaft is broken or the splines in the direct drum for the intermediate shaft are stripped.
Your transmission needs to be rebuild or replaced.

Agreed. My money is on the drum being stripped.

Metal shavings or noise
Shouldn't there be noise or metal shavings if there was a failure like that?

If its stripped splines, thats a situation thats been developing over a long time. You're not going to find much in the way of defined metal particles, just a lot of grey sludge. As far as noise, I had a drum failure in a Tahoe with a 4L60e that was nearly silent, just a very faint whir, but I lost reverse and second completely and immediately.

Fluid is clean, no sludge, no burnt smell, no metal in pan. Trying to test the dual shift solenoids now. It has three pins. Trying to read up how to put 12v to see if they close. Also what the Ohms should read and what pins to connect to.
