Default 2004 gettin truck to start issue

I have a 2004 Ford F-150. It has a starter and new battery less then 1 yr old. The old starter that was taken off im told still worked wen tested. The issue i am having is when i get in the truck to start it sometimes it starts right up no problem. Other times i go to start it and just get a click out of it. But allowing the key to stay in the on position for 15-30 seconds then start it it turn right over runs fine. But here recently thats happening more often and i cant get the truck to start more times then not anymore. Also if it helps or maybe a part of the problem my truck just recently startes throwing me incorrectly odd and inaccurate gas gauge readings a part of the time. Im so stumped on this matter please help !

Do you hear a clicking coming from the passenger side foot well? Could be the solenoid, try jumping it and see if it starts then.
