Default 2004 FX4 shifter issue

hope this is the shifter cable and not something else.

I can go from park to Reverse and any other gear without any issues, but, if I go from Drive to reverse, the reverse will not engage. the tranny is in neutral, then, if I move the shifter a little pass the letter R, it will engage. even the reverse light will not go on unless I push the shifter a little pass the R.

any ideas what this can be?

Check the linkage underneath at the transmission first. Have somebody shift gears while you're underneath. Of course, set the pk brake and/or chock the wheels.

Good advice nrivera, sounds to me like the grommet on the shifting linkage is shot.
OP, you can go to Autozone and in their accessories area, there is a package of different plastic grommets for about 5 or 6 bucks that has one in the package that will fit. I actually think its the one with the letters on it. I had the same issue a couple years ago, got the kit from AZ and spent about 10 or 15 minutes to fix it. No issues since. Not a hard job at all, the original grommet gets brittle over time and just breaks.
