Default 2004 f150 vs 2003 f150

Hey, this is my first post here and well the main reason I joined was to ask this question and do some more research. I am looking for my first truck and I really like the design of the 2004 compared to that of the 2003. I have been looking around on craigslist and have found some pretty good deals on trucks of this year but most are the xlt package and they are about half half supercrew and supercab. The ones that are on the right now are mostly supercabs and this may actually be a good thing since this will be my first automobile and it would be better having the supercab with the small back seats compared to the full size of the supercrew which will allow me not to have to drive everyone around since they wont be that comfortable in the back of the supercab. My dad has a 2003 f150 lariat fx4 supercrew and it is a nice truck although I don't like the design having all round edges. Although this is not out of option I would prefer the 2004 styling. So now here are the real questions. Is the supercab just as safe as the supercrew for collisions? I have read that the 03-previous year supercabs were death traps while the 04-present are just as safe as the supercrews from both the 03 styling super crews and the 04 styling supercrews. Is this true? Is the 3 valve system a bad system and can it really screw up and brake off your spark plugs? If so I have also hear the 2 valve system of the 03 can split them in half. Which do you prefer? How is the handling between the two? Is it true that in both motors the cam phasers tick really bad or is this a myth? The reason I ask this one is well my dad has a 03 and it doesn't tick and a buddy who I fish and hunt with has a n 04 and his doesn't tick either. lastly I have hear a lot of bad about the windows on the 2004 with the motors in them going out. Is this true? basically which do you guys think would be a better option for a kid looking for his first truck? and which is better for me supercab or supercrew? Thanks.

A supercab. Make sure it's a 4.6 not a 5.4 the 5.4's do snap spark plugs and have cam phaser problems. The 2v 5.4's in the 03's are really good motors. They didn't split spark plugs they would back out of the heads and blow out because the torque numbers weren't tight enough. Anyway I'd look at some 03's mine has 246,000 miles on it and it runs great no issues. And they are better built in my opinion. The 04-08 are better looking but the 03's are just tougher I think. And cheaper. And you can get nice ones that have leather. The 04's and newer come with 5.4 3v's if your in a lariat or higher up trim.

Hello, idk about the safety thing, but I'm sure it is being a newer model. Now, I own a 2004 lariat with the 5.4L and I had Ford change my spark plugs because they are notorious for seizing up in the head. Even then they will break. The ticking is also an issue in them. On mine it does tick, I have had friends ask why mine sounds like a diesel. But it shouldn't hurt anything, just from the cam phasors. Never have heard of the window motors going out. Lastly it depends what you want it for. I personally have had mine since I was 17, crewcab, and love it. Of course I don't mind hauling friends, plus the extra room is nice. But that's opinion. My family has had it since it was brand new. These engines can be a pain. I have 120k miles on mine and nothing bad has happened to the engine. On these Ford engines, if you're willing to spend money and take time to take care of them, changing oil and filters, taking it in to get serviced and tunes when needed, cleaning parts(like the MAF and the butterfly, ect.) then it will be a hell of an engine. From what I've seen the 2003 models will last for sure, but I've never owned one.
Hope this helps!

Personally if all else was equal, I'd go with the '03 (next to the last year of a proven model) over the '04.

As to safety, the best safety feature of any vehicle is the person behind the wheel.

Both me and my dad have 2005s with the 5.4. I have 137,000 he has around 145,000. Ive had my fuel pump go out and he had his altenator go out other than that no major issues. Both our engines tick tho.

The '04 is heavier by half a ton, and has marginal brakes compared with the older truck.

Longer stopping distance, handling is roughly on par, but the '03 is slightly more nimble.

The '04 new body style has a better safety cage, but if you don't get into the accident to begin with, it's not going to be called into play.

I strongly prefer the `03`s handling
