My 05 F150 transmission just went out on mine. It had 184k on it. It was a state supervisor road truck. So it may have been used for pulling.

What's crazy to me is how Honda (and I love Honda engines) gets very little flack for such weak trans and a pretty high rate of trans failure.

My 04 been good so far but not enough miles to say its good yet.

Or idling for hours at a time. The transmission pump runs whenever the engine does.

Yep. Whats bad is I had a reman Ford transmission put in and when I picked it up yesterday, it messed up again. Turned out the remanufactured transmission was defective. Hopefully I will have it back on Thursday.

I greatly appreciate the feedback. Was just curious others may have encountered. To me the "www.complaints" website seemed to be exaggerating the problem based on the numbers, not sure how they can get away with that sort of thing and not be accountable for statements like "avoid this truck like the plague". While I can rebuild manual transmissions the automatics are something I have never attempted and was concerned that there may have been some inherent design issue with it since 2004 was a big year of changes. Still researching our explorer (now with the new Certified Transmissions re manufactured trans).

My 05 w/130,000 lost its trans a couple months back. While I was not happy... my buddies 05 Z71 transmission failed twice and had his rearend chew up the gears.
Nothing is safe from failure, so buy the truck the you want.

Couldn't have said it better myself.

My 04 Lariat has 85k and I take care of it. If my trans failed I'd feel the same as you buddy. But fact is there were so many sold that the failure rate isn't anything you can reasonably say is not in line with any other manufacturer. Hell, Toyota/Lexus has had their *** handed to em lately. Lets face it, any recall is a huge slap as govt protects ALL of these manufacturers much more than the consumer.

My last truck - 2000 F150 was still running strong @ 130,000 miles when I sold it. Now have a 2004 with 60,000 miles that is still like new. If I were a betting man, I would take odds on it being good for many more years and miles.
I think your 2000 F-150 had the 4R60, while I think our trucks have the 4R70 or 4R75. Our trucks are supposed to have the better gearbox.

I'd recommend the moog ball joints with the zerk fittings so they can be greased if the ball joints on your Lariat have play.
I've posted a DIY guide for the lower ball joint replacement a while back. It's pretty simple. Far easier than a spark plug replacement. Apart from the solenoids which I haven't tackled yet, most of the front end work on our trucks is straightforward.

Default That was me in 2010

I wouldn't expect this with such a popular truck. Anyone similar experiences as described in this link??

Yep that was me raising a stink in 2010. Same name. Just dropped a reman engine in that same truck. Iam now on a clear mission to buy a Toyota or Honda or anything besides a ford next year.
