Default 2004 F150 Transfer case fluid

Hey everyone,

I've been reading that ATF is the way to go for these transfer cases. With a transfer case, would you bother spending the extra money and going with a synthetic or just the regular ATF?

Also, how would you go about flushing the transfer case if your current fluid is pretty nasty?

Thanks!!

It's a simple drain for the transfer case. I used something similar to this
Amazon.com: Plews 55001 Lubrimatic Fluid Quart Pump, Fits Standard Quart Bottles: Automotive Amazon.com: Plews 55001 Lubrimatic Fluid Quart Pump, Fits Standard Quart Bottles: Automotive
to refill the case. It makes life 1000 times easier and is pretty cheap. Your local parts store should have one for around 10 bucks. I highly suggest getting one and stay away from mercon v for transfer case applications. The case requires about two quarts.

When I changed mine, Ford no longer offered the standard mercon. I gave them a call and was told mercon v was safe for it.... well, they are no longer recommending that and techs are seeing them explode. Ford now has a specific fluid for transfer cases which I think is called mortorcraft transfer case fluid??

I have to get in there and change out that mercon v in my transfer case....
