2004 F150 Cruise Control Stopped Working
#11
4 common causes.
1. Rear or 3rd brake light is out.
2. Switch on pedal
3. Brake interlock switch (if you have the floor shifter, it's in there, easy to replace)
4. Clockspring
My problem was the brake interlock switch as I COULD shift out of park without using the brake. Took 15 minutes to replace. I had a recall on my 2004 FX4 for the clockspring and had that fixed, check with Ford to see if you have any outstanding recalls.

I bet it's this. The brake switch is easy to remove from the pedal, and there is a side cover on it that you can open and see all (4 I believe) switches. I had a similar problem, and although the lights were working, it was dumb luck, because a switch contact had broken off and was shorting across the other switches. Do yourself a favor and check this before moving forward.
There are some youtube videos out there if you need guidance.

1. The 3rd brake light is good.
2. I replaced the clock spring.
3. I don't have a floor shifter.
4. I replaced the switch on the pedal.
I still have no cruise. Other than the switches on the wheel, is there anything else it could be? Remember, this started after I replaced the engine. I have no check engine codes but I'm now thinking that is somehow related.
Thanks,
Brad

I took the truck to the shop and was told that the cruise doesn't work because the instrument cluster is bad. Does that seem reasonable? All of the guages work fine. The brake (not abs) light is on. It's been on for much longer than the cruise hasn't worked. The part is $300 so I don't want to dive in if it's not the issue.
Thanks,
Brad

breichert, did you ever get this fixed?
My brake warning light comes on from time to time. While it is lit, my cruise control won't work.
I traced the issue to the instrument cluster connector on the left side of the cluster. I cleaned the connector as best as I could and put a dab of dielectric grease on it during reassembly. That helped a bit. I can get the light to go out if I give the left side of the cluster a good whack with my palm.
I posted a question about the light.
If your brake warning light is on your cruise won't work. The cruise control module thinks you are stepping on the brake and will disengage the cruise (or won't allow it to engage).
