2004 F150 Binding/Shuddering?
Hey guys, I have a 2004 f150 (5.4) with 160,000 miles. Transmission is less than 3 years old. Yesterday I was cursing at 60 and it felts like something was binding, car wasn't coasting freely. It would do this at times, then other times coast freely. Then it quickly progressed. I got up to 60 and it felt like someone even tapped the brakes 1 or 2 times. Pulled off of the highway out of fear, and from a dead stop, the car shuddered a 4 times before going. It idles perfectly, and two mechanics have said it isn't the brakes and no engine or transmission codes are showing up. I am truly at a loss. This morning I found that from a stop, if I let it roll forward then slowly accelerate, no shudder. If from a dead stop I do not let it roll and simply gas, it shudders 1-3 times. Any clues?

When was the last time you did your plugs and maintenance on the coils?

In full disclosure, I am not sure that he did. I heard to test for a coil issue, hold the brakes down in drive and press the gas slowly. If the engine thuds or knocks, thats the issue. Did that today and mine knocked/thudded 4-5 times. Is this accurate?

LOL Ive never heard that test but hey it might work. The only way I know of to for sure check for a misfire is to check data while its running. Do you have an Android phone or tablet and an extra $30ish? If so you can check misfires with the Torque Pro android app and a good Bluetooth OBD2 adapter. I recommend this adapter https://www.amazon.com/BAFX-Products...ords=bafx+obd2

I do not, unfortunately I'm an IOS guy :/ SO my issue has gotten a bit worse, but I am leaning towards coil. On my drive home, I noticed that it almost felt like my transmission was slipping as the car stuttered. If I came to a dead stop and started in first, I would get the stutters, and the RPM's would even rev up pretty freely. If I started in second gear and shifted into D, it was slow but fine. Thoughts?

If you think its a coil I would test them and probably just do the boots and springs first. I like this guys method and I found a bad coil using my multimeter to check the ohms. All my good ones ohmed at 1.7 or 1.8 the bad one ohmed at 1.3 ohms.

If you aren't sure if the plugs were done, do them. Replace them with NEW Motorcraft SP515 plugs. Take each coil, since it'll be off the plug anyway, remove its boot and spring, clean them, apply dielectric grease and reinstall. I bet this will cure your problem.

I know this sounds stupid but from your first post I'd check your rear brakes. You said two mechanics told you it wasn't brakes but did they actually remove the rear drums and look? I say this because they can be a bear to remove. I had the same symptoms and it was a lining that fell off and would bind up in the drum.
