If something is wrong with the engine that can't be fixed for less than a grand or two I would just go with a replacement engine and hang on to the truck... if you still like the way it looks.

I just heard back from the mechanic, and he echoed what the other one said. He recommends a new engine. I asked what caused them to go that route instead of fixing the problem, and he said the chain systems, cam phasers, and solenoids all needed to be replaced.
His explanation was that you're looking at $2500 to $3000 in repairs and it may not completely fix the problem. He said they've done that with two customers within the last year and they still had problems and within a year needed a new engine.
They quoted me $7000 for a Jasper engine - parts and labor.
I called another mechanic who said he can install a re-manufactured Ford engine for a lot cheaper than a Jasper and that it has the same warranty - 3 years or 100,000 mi. I'm going to send him my truck's info and he's gonna try to get me a quote today.
The truck still looks brand new, and the mechanic I talked to today said everything looks good except the engine.

I don't know where your located but here in southern California your can get a reman engine for 3k ish off Craigslist prolly less if you hunt for it lol. I'd say you got a good deal on the truck but if it's truly just cam phaser parts idk why a whole new engine would be needed. I know one thing though when my engine goes out I'm getting cam phaser lock outs and a tuner with the new/reman engine. 151k has the tick but still runs good.

I am in Georgia and Precision Engines told me they could sell a remanufactured 5.4 for around $2600 -$2800. LKQ and a few others were also a little under $3,000. ALL with a 3/36 warranty.

So another mechanic just got back to me with a quote of $3525 for a remanufactured engine from LKQ.
But it doesn't come with spark plugs or coil packs. He said spark plugs are an additional $13 x 8. He'd put coil packs on from the old engine or he can get a new set for $360. Labor is another $1500.
After tax, I'm looking at about $6000.
If I have to pay for new coil packs any way, should I try to replace the coil packs and solenoids first and see if that fixes things? Is there any way to truly verify that it's "fixed" after that?

I got a buddy that does a bit of warranty work for the local Ford dealer. Last winter I went through a morning of the diesel sounding syndrome, he showed me a list from the dealership with reman engine prices. 5.4 Ford reman was less than $4k. Its been a year, so I may be off a little, but not far! Don't know what the core charge could be, but either way, if yours runs it should be an acceptable core. I found don't skimp on the oil, use what the book says, and change it more than the 7500 miles. I go 4-5k on oil changes, and only use Motorcraft 5w-20 semi synthetic. Last winter I skimped, thus the diesel sounding gas motor at -25f. This winter its been good so far! Good luck..
